Florida is an internationally well known US state in the southeastern part of the United States. The Sunshine State (its Nickname) occupies a long flat peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean in the east and the Gulf of Mexico in the west. Florida is bordered in the north by the US states of Alabama and Georgia.
The southeasternmost US state is a popular tourist destination and home to a variety of attractions like Walt Disney World, Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center, the Universal Orlando Resort, Miami Beach, the Ten Thousand Islands, the Everglades, Key West, and the Florida Keys.
The territory of La Florida was ceded to the United States by Spain in 1819; it was then known as Florida Territory. Admission to the Union on 3rd March 1845, as the 27th state.
